How ScentVerdict Works
1. Ingredient Analysis
Every perfume is broken down into its notes and accords. We weight these by phase (top, heart, base) because what you smell after 2 hours matters more than the first 5 minutes.
Opening notes might grab attention, but you'll be wearing the dry-down all day. Our analysis reflects that reality.
2. Similarity Scoring
We calculate similarity based on three factors:
- Shared dominant accords (40% weight) — The broad scent families that define character
- Shared key notes (35% weight) — The specific ingredients that create signature elements
- Style profile match (25% weight) — Characteristics like sweetness, freshness, projection
This weighting means two perfumes can share many notes but still score lower if their overall character differs significantly.
3. Difference Detection
Similar isn't identical. We highlight key differences so you know what to expect.
If Perfume B is sweeter than Perfume A, we tell you. If one has significantly stronger projection, we note it. These differences help you decide whether a "similar" perfume will actually work for your preferences.
4. Avoid Warnings
If you love fresh scents, we'll warn you when a "similar" perfume has a heavy oud base. No surprises.
Our avoid warnings flag potential mismatches between your stated preferences and recommendation characteristics. They're not criticisms of the perfume — just honest flags that it might not be right for you.
